Native American Student Services at the University of Arkansas

At the University of Arkansas, a new hub is emerging to support and empower Indigenous students: the Native American Student Services (NASS) department. Directed by Shawnee Tribal Citizen Gregory Jones, NASS serves as a crucial resource for students of Native American heritage, fostering a sense of community and belonging on campus.

NASS offers a wide array of services tailored to meet the unique needs of Indigenous students. From academic advising to cultural programming, the department ensures that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically, personally, and culturally. NASS connects students with scholarship opportunities, provides mentorship, and organizes cultural events, all aimed at enhancing the university experience for Indigenous students.

A key initiative of NASS is its commitment to preserving and celebrating Native American culture. Through events such as guest lectures and workshops, students have the opportunity to engage with and learn from their cultural heritage. These events enrich the campus community and provide a platform for Indigenous voices to be heard and celebrated.

The creation of the Native American Leadership Council (NALC) is another fantastic initiative. In partnership with NASS and the School of Art, NALC serves as a cornerstone in providing guidance, support, and advocacy for Indigenous students at the university.

NASS also serves as an advocate for Indigenous students, ensuring that their voices are represented and their needs addressed within the university community. By fostering partnerships with other campus organizations, NASS works to create a more equitable and supportive environment for all students.

Beyond its on-campus initiatives, NASS connects Indigenous students with resources and opportunities beyond the university. Through partnerships with tribal organizations and community groups, NASS helps students build networks and access support systems that extend far beyond the university campus.
